Tr106

SäSt 799 (Hartmann 3152/1908), location and date unknown. This engine later became DRG 56 624 and was written off in 1926. Source: Lokomotiv-Archiv Sachsen 2 (see References).

Class IX V of Sächsische Staatsbahn (SäSt) was superseded in 1907 by class IX HV, which featured steam superheating. Compound steam engine was retained, as was Klien-Lindner rear axle and large, tubular steam collector above the boiler. New boiler also featured Belpaire-type firebox, but was fitted with Schmidt-type superheater with 24 smoke tubes. Steam pressure was increased from 14 to 15 bar.

Between 1907 and 1908 Hartmann built thirty examples, which were given SäSt service numbers 771 through 800. Later examples differed in minor details. In service they supplemented their older kinsmen as freighters for more demanding tracks. Like class IX V, they were coupled with  three-axle 3T9, 3T12 or 3T13 tenders. After the war 25 examples were taken into the DRG inventory and classed 566. Although they were more efficient and powerful than class IX V, their service was almost equally short. Only two examples, 56 614 (former 785, 3138/1908) and 56 620 (former 792, 3145/1908), survived until 1927. Not a single example has been preserved.

Most probably the remaining five engines of this type (service numbers 781, 786, 793, 794 and 797) were taken over by PKP; however, Lokomotiv-Archiv Sachsen 2 (see References) does not confirm this. According to LP, they were later classed Tr106, but this source states that this is based on secondary evidence and ultimate confirmation is lacking. As with ‘sister’ class Tr105 (ex SäSt IX V), virtually nothing is known about their service in Poland, apart from the fact that all were withdrawn before 1927, as no mention is made of them in Steam Locomotive Characteristics (see References).
